    Abstract
Strategic Compass are new guidelines for the European Union in the field of security and defense, which aim to protect its citizens and member states from various threats, including conflicts triggered by Russia, such as the invasion of Ukraine. In response to increasing threats, the European Union formed Strategic Compass in an effort to strengthen its defense capabilities and reduce dependence on NATO. This research aims to find out the reasons that the Strategic Compass was formed to replace NATO or as a complement to increasing the strategic autonomy of the European Union. By using the alignment theory stated by David Erkomaishvili, this research will analyze whether Strategic Compass meets the forming criteria alignment which could replace NATO as the European Union's collective defense mechanism. This research will also examine the relationship between Strategic Compass The European Union and NATO in response to threats from Russia. Through literature studies, this research seeks to explain how the situation in Eastern Europe, especially the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has become the main trigger for the formation of Strategic Compass. The research results show that Strategic Compass is not a replacement for NATO, but rather a complement to the European security community in managing crises. Strategic Compass does not have the capacity to replace NATO's role and completely eliminate the influence of the United States on the alliance.
