This research was conducted to determine the effect of adding chitosan to the characteristics of biodegradable foam and to determine the optimal concentration of chitosan on the quality of biofoam. Coconut coir cellulose fiber was isolated from pure coconut coir through a delignification and bleaching process by NaOH and H2O2. Chitosan was isolated from shrimp shells through the processes of demineralization, deproteination, and deacetylation using NaOH and HCl. Variations in the concentration of chitosan added to the biofoam composition were 0, 15, 30, and 45% w/w starch. The results of the analysis of the physical and mechanical properties of the biofoam showed that the addition of chitosan had an effect on the characteristics of the biofoam. The most optimal concentration of chitosan that produces the best biofoam characteristics is 45%.en_US
