cyberspace, where someone uses a fake identity to attract other users into romantic
relationships (Samudro, 2022). This study aims to find out how catfishing actors
present themselves through dating apps based on the experiences of the

catfishing phenomenon based on the level of high-stakes or low-stakes lies. This
study uses two main concepts, namely Computer-mediated Communication (CMC)
and the Concept of Lies, which are used to measure the level of lies perpetrated by
catfishing actors. The method used in this research is to use a qualitative
descriptive research method. The interpretive paradigm. In using dating apps, the
perpetrator has a self-presentation strategy that is displayed on the application's
homepage to attract the attention of potential victims. In addition, catfishing actors
also make several other efforts to create the victim's trust in him so that he can
carry out extortion in the form of money. This is evidenced by the findings obtained
based on the results of interviews conducted.
