Red mud is a by-product of processed bauxite to be the main product of alumina. Red sludge waste or commonly called tailings waste has a lot of iron content which makes it brownish red. Until now, there has been no adequate handling of red mud, therefore red mud is only accumulating and pollute the environment, even though there is a large potential for processing this red mud, so could increase economic value. Iron oxide itself is a raw material for the paper industry, rubber, dyes, and much more. Seeing the increasing need for iron oxide, the establishment of an iron oxide plant from red mud in Indonesia is quite promising. This factory is planned to be built in Tayan, West Kalimantan, where the location is close to the ICA Plant, which is an alumina factory, with a production capacity of 7000 tons/year. The process used is the hydrometallurgy process, where dry red sludge waste is reacted with hydrochloric acid as much as 2,946 tons. The main product produced is ferric chloride as much as 6.971,9 tons with a selling value (Rp. 40.000) and the by-product produced from this production process is AlCl3.6H2O Crystal as much as 23.703,2 tons which still has a selling value of (Rp. 2.000.000). The utilities needed in this plant are water as much as 173313.185 kg/hour, electricity as much as 221,7243 kWh, the number of workers required is 202 workers. Based on the calculation of economic evaluation, it was found that the total capital investment required was Rp13.115.747.191.169 and working capital of Rp13.046.441.019.001. At 100% production capacity, simple payback period of 2.0041 years, discounted payback period of 2.9049 years, BEP of 26,2444 %, SDP of 0.003749% and IRR of 34,73%. Based on these results, this iron oxide plant from red mud deserves further acknowledging.
