Selection of Standalone & Motorized RSS in the 8.5” Directional Well Section Based on Its Drillability at Handil Field Pertamina Hulu Mahakam
Abstract
Directional drilling (deviated well) is become popular in the modern era especially due to field limitations with advanced technologies and techniques. Compared to a vertical well, deviated well will linearly increase the torque value. Increasing torque will make a well cannot be drilled due to the limitation of either rig capacity or connection make-up torque even using the RSS (standalone) where all of the drill string rotates. In some cases, to solve the high torque problem, motorized RSS is used as the next innovation of RSS. By using the motorized RSS, surface torque can be reduced to decrease the friction factor because the rotational value at the bit can still be achieved with higher torque and RPM due to the conversion of hydraulic energy into rotational energy from motor components (rotor & stator).
Both wells named H-AA-01 and H-BB-01 are the wells that have been drilled in Handil Field by the Delta Drilling Team of Pertamina Hulu Mahakam which is used as well data and an example to choose the suitable RSS types. From the simulation result, in H-AA-01 well can be drilled using standalone RSS where the connection make-up torque is in the safe limitation area, while on the other hand, in H-BB-01 well must be drilled using motorized RSS by having more power given at the bit to reduce the surface and string torque.
