    Abstract
Qodri Rizkan Syam, 101321041. Design, Development, and Testing of Conventional Linear Swelling Meter for Measuring Swelling in Drilling Operations This research was motivated by the limitations of commercial Linear Swelling Meter (LSM) instruments, which are generally expensive, large in dimension, and their closed design precludes direct visual observation. The primary objective of this study is to design, build, and test a Conventional Linear Swelling Meter (CLSM) as a portable, visually transparent, and cost-effective alternative to overcome these limitations. The applied research methodology includes a literature study, prototype fabrication using affordable materials, and comparative testing against an industry-standard instrument, the Grace Linear Swelling Meter. The tool's performance validation was conducted using three types of fluids with different reactivities: potassium chloride (KCl), polyamine, and fresh water. The main results of this research demonstrate the functional success and accuracy of the tool. The Conventional Linear Swelling Meter (CLSM) prototype was successfully fabricated with a significant production cost efficiency of 98%. Functionally, the Conventional Linear Swelling Meter (CLSM) was successfully validated, with test results showing a measurement error rate consistently below 10% compared to the standard instrument. This proves that the Conventional Linear Swelling Meter (CLSM) is a validated, accurate, and efficient alternative solution for swelling tests in educational contexts as well as for preliminary analysis in drilling fluid research.
